Fashionshow: Working Class Daughters

A car is standing there with its trunk open and the radio running. Women* and queers are speaking - and they’re speaking about class. Based on interviews, the installation Fashionshow: Working Class Daughters deals with questions of class, gender and migration. In doing so, their own role as working class academics is reflected upon and the intersectionality and links to identity and structure categories are revealed nearly incidentally.

The installation is based upon a past performance and the T-shirt collection that was especially designed for it. The concept was inspired by pictures of Eastern European flea markets and informal trading. The conventions of fashion shows are played with subtly and a current phenomenon is referred to, where so-called “workwear”, work clothing, is moving into high fashion contexts. What's classy if you're rich, but trashy if you're poor

The installation speaks of women* to mark the socially constructed and entangled nature of the category, referring to all people who self-identify as women and/or are read as such and are affected by sexism.

Artists

Working Class Daughters

Working Class Daughters is a work cycle examining the links between class, gender and migration thatthe artists have been working on since 2018. Proceeding from (their own) post-Soviet migration experiences and a long friendship and sisterhood, the artists are primarily interested in (biographical) stories that remain invisible or hardly find a voice, as well as in historical and current references to labor and labor disputes. Their working method is distinguished by an transdisciplinary approach in which they attempt to question their respective expertise (theater, sociology, visual art/design) and learn from each other as well as from others. In doing so, the intention of WCD is to be understood programmatically: “We want to initiate a conversation about class and make its historical and socioeconomic conditions visible.”

Working Class Daughters is made up of:

Kristina Dreit was born in 1988 in Krupskoje, Kazakhstan, studied scenic art in Hildesheim and Zurich as well as at the Vienna Academy of Visual Art, and works in performative settings as a director, dramaturg and artist.

Karolina Dreit was born in 1984 in Karabulak, Kazakhstan and is a sociologist and a co-publisher of the anthology Ambivalences of Normativity in Critical Feminist Studies. She is active in artistic, collective and political contexts and works on the topics of class, labor, precariousness and precarity.

Anna Trzpis-McLean was born in 1984 in Mielec, Poland, studied at the Academy of Design in Offenbach am Main and works as a designer in the fields of stage design, objects, space and drawings (annatrzpismclean.com).
